Aunties’ is our love letter to African women and the ways in which they nurture and express their love through food. It is an ode to the role of aunties in our communities that aims to both highlight African ingredients and exemplify our food as an African love language.
THE Auntie behind Auntie’s
For as long as I can remember, I have always been enamored with the sense of wonderment food brings me. As the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants, the ritual of food preparation and meal sharing is intrinsically linked to my culture and is the source of some of my most cherished memories. Naturally, the harmonious point at which culture and food meet, was where the idea for Auntie's was born.
In the early days of the COVID quarantine, like the rest of the world, I found myself playing around with leftovers and creating fun ways to repurpose dishes. I had half of a loaf of boozy plantain bread I wanted to reuse and the idea to transform it into an ice cream immediately popped into my brain. At that moment, it dawned on me that I had never seen ice cream featuring African flavors. I instantly made the connection that ice cream could serve as the perfect medium to showcase the versatility of African ingredients.
The pattern of marginalizing Africa bleeds into the realm of food, creating negative perceptions of African cultural cuisine. Auntie's seeks to shift this narrative by introducing African flavors through the familiarity of ice cream, while highlighting the variety and nuance in each country's food culture.
